Enkosi Cookathon

Following the success of last year's Community Cookathon, we're bursting to announce that the second Yuppiechef cookathon has just gone live - this time with a delicious dollop of local flavour.

We've teamed up with South African food icons Justin Bonello, Phillippa Cheifitz and Ina Paarman and put together a collection of seven classic dishes for the supercalifragilistic Enkosi Cookathon.

To take part (and a little something will be sent to everyone who does) all you need to do is cook one of the seven dishes and send us a photo before midnight on 23 October. The bold and beautiful masterchefs who submit photos of all seven dishes will stand a chance to win the grand prize of R2,500 worth of kitchen tools and there will be spot prizes for twitter process pics. Enkosi, indeed.

May the force of the Cookathon be with you. Here's how you can take part.

Tools & tips for the braai master

Yes, it is possible to braai without a braai but it's not easy. These top 10 tools will put you on the fast track to being a braai master. Some are pretty fancy like this thermometer with blue tooth roaming function; others are more essential (braai grid and tongs for the win).

Feast your eyes on our 10 tools for the braai master and learn how to make the most of your Weber with these basic but handy tips:

Marvellous Mungo Design

Mungo Design is the latest brand to be added to the Yuppiechef fold. With beautiful tea towels, aprons and even a macho Man Cloth, we admire Mungo's knack for making ordinary things beautiful. Especially because they do it all right here, in South Africa. Ayoba.

Did you know, Butcher Stripe Aprons originated in York in 1500s? True story.

Learn how to make a flat white, Bialetti-style

Don't you think it would be impressive if you could whip up great coffee for friends at home? Well, luckily for us, it's not rocket science:

Perfect picnic ideas

Be the envy of fellow picnickers with a few simple tricks. Crystal glasses and white linen are one thing but strawberry cheesecake in a bottle? Sublime.

Got a picnic basket? Always helpful. We like this one.

Step right up, Minichefs

We are big fans of little people getting busy in the kitchen. You may not think your four year old can chop an onion with a sharp knife, but we beg to differ (with guidance and supervision, of course).

Here are three summer lunch ideas that double up as small person activities:

Shrews, fruit & handwritten cards

DIY kebabs

Spice up meat or vegetable kebabs by using rosemary or lemon grass as skewers.

Or you can buy some metal skewers and try this winning recipe for fruit kebabs with chocolate sauce.

Got a good name?

We need someone to name the newest member to join Spatchit, Cookie and Whisket in our shrew family.

Suggest a name and secure the coveted title of shrew namer.

We love writing cards

If you've ordered some of the world's best kitchen tools from us, you'll know we send a handwritten card with every order.

Ever wondered who puts pen to ink? Meet our card writers.

And that's a wrap.

See you soon,
The Yuppiechef Team
